چکیده

The paper describes an algorithm for generating an approximation of the medial axis transform (MAT) for planar objects with free form boundaries. The algorithm generates the MAT by a tracing technique that marches along the object boundary rather than the bisectors of the boundary entities. The level of approximation is controlled by the choice of the step size in the tracing procedure. Criteria based on distance and local curvature of boundary entities are used to identify the junction or branch points and the search for these branch points is more efficient than while tracing the bisectors. The algorithm works for multiply connected objects as well. Results of implementation are provided. q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Voronoi diagram and medial axis algorithm for planar domains with curved boundaries I. Theoretical foundations

In this rst installment of a two-part paper, the underlying theory for an algorithm that computes the Voronoi diagram and medial axis of a planar domain bounded by free-form (polynomial or rational) curve segments is presented. An incremental approach to computing the Voronoi diagram is used, wherein a single boundary segment is added to an existing boundary-segment set at each step. The introd...

Dynamic Medial Axes of Planar Shapes

In this paper a computational model called dynamic medial axis (DMA) is proposed to describe the internal evolution of planar shapes. To define the DMA, a symbolic representation called matching list is proposed to depict the topological structure of the medial axis. As shown in this paper with provable properties, the DMA exhibits an interesting dynamic skeleton structure for planar shapes. Fi...

Distance functions and skeletal representations of rigid and non-rigid planar shapes

Shape skeletons are fundamental concepts for describing the shape of geometric objects, and have found a variety of applications in a number of areas where geometry plays an important role. Two types of skeletons commonly used in geometric computations are the straight skeleton of a (linear) polygon, and the medial axis of a bounded set of points in the k-dimensional Euclidean space. However, e...

Voronoi diagram and medial axis algorithm for planar domains with curved boundaries — II: Detailed algorithm description

Details of algorithms to construct the Voronoi diagrams and medial axes of planars domain bounded by free-form (polynomial or rational) curve segments are presented, based on theoretical foundations given in the rst installment Ramamurthy and Farouki, J. Comput. Appl. Math. (1999) 102 119–141 of this two-part paper. In particular, we focus on key topological and computational issues that arise ...

Medial axis computation for planar free-form shapes

We present a simple, efficient, and stable method for computing—with any desired precision—the medial axis of simply connected planar domains. The domain boundaries are assumed to be given as polynomial spline curves. Our approach combines known results from the field of geometric approximation theory with a new algorithm from the field of computational geometry. Challenging steps are (1) the a...
